Syracuse's Southwest Neighbors

Auburn

You’ll find here, a community of comfortable, quiet neighborhoods, historic homes and friendly folks. Located in Cayuga County, Auburn is proud to be part of the beautiful Finger Lakes Region. Although Auburn natives enjoy their own Owasco Lake, Skaneateles Lake and Cayuga Lake aren’t very far away either.

The Finger Lakes Region is one of America’s premier wine country destinations featuring the largest concentration of wineries east of California. The talented winemakers from almost 100 wineries welcome you year-round to taste and savor this unique wine growing region. Explore the Keuka, Seneca, and Cayuga Wine Trails. Visit gorgeous parks, take a boat ride on pristine lakes, or peruse world class museums … you’ll find something for everyone in the Finger Lakes.

A favorite gathering spot in Auburn is Emerson Park, on the north shore of Owasco Lake, where you’ll find year round activities such as picnicing, swimming, boating, fishing, concerts and more. Owasco Lake, which is the smallest of the six major Finger Lakes is 11 miles long and 1.3 miles wide at its widest point. It’s not unusual to catch the Syracuse Symphony playing on a warm summer’s night at Emerson Park.

Auburn is a town rich in history. Tourists can visit the home of Harriet Tubman, who was born a slave in 1820, and helped over 300 slaves escape through the Underground Railroad. They can also explore the home or William Henry Seward, who purchased the state of Alaska from Russia in 1867. And did you know that Auburn is the birthplace of "Talking Films"?

Birthplace of Talking Films

The cost of living allows families to purchase a single family home and still have disposable income. Technology is leading the economic development of Auburn through partnerships with Cornell University and the Syracuse Metropolitan Development Association. Auburn has a focus that revolves around renewable energy and smart solutions for growing companies.

Skaneateles

About 20 miles southwest of Syracuse is the historic Village of Skaneateles. Set on a jewel-clear lake, Skaneateles is home to a thriving residential and business community, and host to thousands of visitors and vacationers each year.

Gazebo at Clift Park

On Friday nights in the summer, park your boat and throw a blanket on the lawn in front of the Gazebo in Clift Park for a live band performance. How about a polo game on Sunday? Skaneateles historic ambiance still attracts tourists for their boat excursions, inns, restaurants and spas, as well as the lovely boutiques and specialty shops.

Skaneateles is home to the annual Antique & Classic Boat Show in July, and you won’t want to miss the “Old-Fashioned Dickens Christmas” with actors in period-costumes, performing on the streets. And there's so much more. Parks with playgrounds, jogging paths, basketball and tennis courts - even ice skating. Sidewalks festooned with flowers and dotted with park benches. A scenic pier for strolling, fishing and people-watching. A fascinating museum. A cozy public library with a walk-in gallery of works by the late Skaneateles artist John Barrow.

Take a hot-air balloon ride for breathtaking views of Skaneateles and the surrounding area...or get a closeup view on a bicycle. For a view from the lake, there’s dinner cruises, or take a ride on the mail boat. Take a step back in time and visit a water-powered mill that has been in continuous operation since 1823. There’s just so much to see and enjoy here.

As part of the Finger Lakes region, Skaneateles (Skan-ee-atlas) is an Iroquois word meaning long lake and it's just that, a 16 mile stretch of one of the cleanest lakes in the country. You feel a sense of belonging here - whether it's to raise a family, build a business, escape for a weekend or stay for the season.
